Traveling With Your Pet

Oma H. Barnett

I have always had pets in my home. We had many of them growing up, and my children have had pets all their lives. When we lost our dog a few years ago, we decided we were done with having animals because we wanted to take advantage of being empty-nesters and start traveling more. We have enjoyed our freedom…but nowadays, you don’t need to worry about what to do with your pets when you go somewhere, whether for business or pleasure. Just take them with you!!

So many places are now thrilled to accommodate you and your pet. Hotels have doggy treats at the check in desk, small dogs and cats can be in the cabin with you when you fly. Leaving them home alone is no longer your only option.

My daughter’s best friend is a 40lb pound puppy named Koopa. The two are inseparable and I can’t imagine them ever having to be apart for more than a day or so. Fortunately, when my daughter travels, the dog goes too. I also have a friend that refuses to go anywhere because she can’t stand the thought of leaving her pets behind. I have not been able to convince her that she doesn’t have to, but I will continue to work on it!

Hotel chains such as Marriott, Hilton, Holiday Inn, La Quinta, Motel 6, and a whole bunch more welcome your pet. Some require a deposit and a reservation. When making your bookings be sure to ask them about their specific requirements, as each hotel is a bit different.

Here are a few items that are essential in making sure your pet is comfortable for your trip….

*A sturdy, well-ventilated carrier

*Leash, collar and ID badges

*Enough pet food for the entire vacation and bowls

*Litter and box for cats

*Grooming supplies

*Favorite bedding and toys

*Medications, medical records and contact info for a local vet where you’ll be staying

*Current photo in case your pet gets lost

If your pet is comfortable then you will be more relaxed and able to enjoy your trip more.
