The Resort is located 62 miles west of Denver, Colorado and is owned by the city of Denver and managed by Intrawest, the ski resort developer. The area was originally a playground for the rich families of Denver who belonged to the Arlberg Club that is still located on the slopes of the Mary Jane side of the resort. The City of Denver took over and the ski hill has been Colorado’s favorite ever since!
The ski area receives the most snowfall of any of Colorado’s destination resorts and is known for it’s great family atmosphere and the best bump/mogul skiing in all of North America. The resort is really made up of four distinct groups of mountains: Winterpark, Mary Jane, Vasquez Ridge and Vasquez Cirque. The oldest is Winterpark itself and then the 1970’s gave us Mary Jane and with the 1990’s Vasquez Cirque and Ridge were all linked in form what is the greater Winter Park Ski Resort.
The options for where you will want to find lodging for your ski vacation can be broken down into three different areas. The ski in/out option at the base of the resort offers the most convenient and quickest way to hit the slopes. Mostly there are condos and town homes on the bottom and sides of the slopes. Your second choice is to stay in the town of Winter Park which is four miles down US Highway 40. Here there are homes, cabins, condos and town homes and local shops and restaurants. And lastly, there is the option of staying out a little further in the town of Fraser where the Safeway supermarket is located.
There are many things to do if you would like to take a day off from the ski slopes. Fraser has the Fraser sled hill and there are the dog sled rides in Tabernash. Just down the road is the Indian mineral baths of Hot Sulpher Springs.
